Jared Goff officially signed an extension through the 2028 season.
The Detroit Lions quarterback will make $212 million over four years, including $170 million guaranteed, to become the highest-paid player in franchise history. Goff’s new deal also includes a no-trade clause.
Speaking to reporters Thursday , Goff identified his most important factors when seeking a new contract.
“It was mostly security,” Goff said, via NFL.com . “You can go back and forth on the numbers and whatnot, and that wasn’t really the thing that was ever something I was extremely concerned with. It was the security and the no-trade clause and all that stuff, knowing that was in there. Feeling secure and knowing that I can now put that behind me and be excited about what’s to come.”
The Lions acquired Goff from the Los Angeles Rams in 2021 when trading away another former No. 1 pick, Matthew Stafford. Many pundits considered Goff a temporary solution for Detroit after he seemed to plateau in L.A.
However, Goff enjoyed a career renaissance in 2022, amassing 4,438 passing yards and 29 touchdowns. Last season, he led the Lions to their first division title in 30 years and first playoff wins since 1992.
Detroit’s run ended with an NFC Championship Game loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Goff is eager to bring Lions fans their first Super Bowl title.
“This city just means so much to me now and will hold a place in my heart forever,” Goff said. “The reward of the contract and the success we’ve been able to have has been awesome, but the journey itself the past three years has been a huge success. … To go through the dark times and grow through those times and learn more about yourself, work on yourself, that’s the win in all of this.”
“I’m happy to be able to stand in front of you and be your quarterback for a lot longer, but this city’s meant a lot to me. I just want to win for them.”
