Jared Goff was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL this year and helped lead the Detroit Lions to their first NFC Championship Game appearance since 1991.
He had the entire city of Detroit chanting his name toward the end of the regular season and the playoffs since the fans were all in on this team.
Even though the Lions came up a little short, they’re still set up for more success in 2024 and beyond with the roster they have.
With that bright future, we caught up with Goff to get his thoughts on his partnership with Jared The Galleria of Jewelry, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson returning, his favorite Dan Campbell story, his success against the blitz, and more.
The Spun: Can you tell us more about your partnership with Jared?
Jared Goff: It’s something that has been pretty organic. Obviously, our names are the same which makes it easy but everything this company stands for and what they provide for their customers, the experience, and the customization. I’ve been able to gift my offensive linemen now some Breitling watches through their help and putting me through the custom experience of making the boxes with them and the Honolulu Blue. All these guys get personal boxes and that’s kinda the microcosm of the experience they provide for customers. It’s been cool for me to experience it and learn about it and it’s definitely a partnership made in heaven. It’s been a lot of fun.
The Spun: What was your immediate reaction when you heard offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was coming back for the 2024 season?
Goff: I was fired up. He told me two days after the season ended. It was good to hear. I know he wants to be here, I know he is excited to be in Detroit. I was pumped.
The Spun: What was it like seeing the city of Detroit come together to support the Lions towards the end of the season?
Goff: It was pretty wild. It was something I didn’t expect or ever plan to experience before and it was something that kinda caught on. It was really cool. It totally took me off guard but our fans are the best in the world and we’re lucky to have them.
The Spun: What’s one of your favorite Dan Campbell stories?
Goff: I think there’s times where we’ll have a team meeting and he’ll start telling a story. He’ll kinda preface it with a, ‘Hey guys, there’s no point to this story but I’m just gonna tell you guys a funny story real quick.’ He’ll do that from time to time and it’s fun to be around. He’ll finish the story and be like, ‘That’s it.’ We’ll be like, alright, we thought there was some motivational gotcha at the end but it’s just kinda a funny story he wanted to tell us.
The Spun: How would you say you have improved against the blitz over the years, especially this year?
Goff: Honestly, I don’t know. Just keep working. I don’t really practice against the blitz much or like plan. You react and keep getting better at your craft. You watch the tape and keep learning.
The Spun: Is there a team you enjoy playing the most in the NFC North?
Goff: You could get me in trouble! Our division is tough, man. Our division is really tough and it’s only going to get tougher next year. I think people started realizing towards the end of the year how good the Bears were and how good Green Bay (the Packers) were. I know Minnesota had some injuries but they were still a tough out for us two weeks in a row there at the end. Minnesota was tough without its quarterback and a handful of other players so all three of those teams are gonna come back and try to take us off. It’ll be fun, but this is a good division.
The Spun: Do you have a pick for Super Bowl LVIII?
Goff: I don’t have a pick but I played both teams quite a bit and they’re both really good teams. It’ll be hard to watch. It’ll sting but it’ll push us forward.
Goff finished the season completing 67.3% of his passes for 4,575 yards through the air, 30 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
