I apologize for not getting this out last week, but you’re getting it now, so I hope this makes up for it.
You all will remember that I do my power rankings a little differently. This go ’round, I’m going to rank the biggest surprises in the NFC North after the first 5 games. And there are quite a few surprises…
Chicago Bears (4-1) If at the beginning of the season you would have told me that the Bears would be 4-1, I would be laughing. Especially after losing running back Tarik Cohen and starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky . But honestly you guys, how are the Chicago Bears 4-1?
I really didn’t think that having quarterback Nick Foles take over the team was going to be a thing this soon in the season, or the fact that he’s taking over a winning team at that. I thought for sure at the beginning of the season that this team would be 0-4 and then looking to start Foles. However, their defense is starting to ball, and they’re starting to gain an identity. It’s crazy, but like former Bears offensive lineman, Kyle Long said, it’s better to be lucky than good!
“I am so happy for the Bears… people say they’re lucky to be 4-1, I’d rather be lucky than good.”

Minnesota Vikings (1-4) I had this team finishing second in the division. I gave them a lot more credit. Low key, this team has really impressed me in the last few seasons, so this season I wasn’t expecting anything different… until they did surprise me.
They’ve been able to succeed despite having QB Kirk Cousins , so I felt this year would be more of the same, but I think losing key pieces of your offense like wide receiver Stefon Diggs , and Pro-Bowl defensive end Everson Griffen on your defense can really hurt. So, the Vikings 1-4 record is surprising.

Can you do a tie in Power Rankings? Honestly, I’m not 100% sure, but my rankings, my rules!
Green Bay Packers (4-0) and the Detroit Lions (1-3) Dayna and Lisa did a podcast a few weeks ago, and they said that they were surprised by the Green Bay Packers being in 1st place. I’m not. Yes, QB Aaron Rodgers has been in a weird funk these past few seasons, but he’s still Aaron Rodgers until proven otherwise. Did drafting QB Jordan Love also have something to do with it? I’m pretty sure it did. Yet, he looks like Aaron Rodgers of old (according to Lucy ) and we should all recognize. And besides…have you seen the NFC North recently? Their only real competition could be the Chicago Bears and I’m still not 100% sold on that.
And last but not least, your Detroit Lions. Sitting pretty at 1-3, for a hot second, they had some (and by some I mean me) a little concerned that they could go 0-16 again. But alas, they were able to squeak out a win via kicker Matt Prater’s leg. Much like their last few seasons, they’re really underperforming. And while it’s not really a surprise, it’s disappointing. I guess the real surprise will be if Patricia makes it through the season.
What are you surprised about so far?
