As part of our Movember charity drive, we allow guest posts to Pride of Detroit for those who give extremely generous donations. So here’s a post from one of our writer’s mothers.
Editor’s Note: For our Movember charity drives, if someone reaches a donation of $1,000 or more, they are eligible to write a post on PrideOfDetroit.com . That is up for grabs again this year, as we raise money for the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center .
Last year, my mother reached this donation threshold and submitted the following piece for publication here. Enjoy.
Detroit Lions Football in the Reisman Home
By: Deb Reisman
When I met Jeremy’s dad, Ken, I knew nothing about football. I quickly learned about the game, rules, and how bad the Lions were. We watched and hoped every year that that would change. We acquired season tickets and went to all the home games. When Jeremy got old enough, he and his sister were included.
Home game days started with a trip to the local cider mill to get donuts and cider to enjoy on the long drive to the Pontiac Silverdome. The drive home was even longer when the Lions lost. Away games were watched on our TV. A few empty soda cans would sometimes end up being thrown at that screen by Jeremy’s dad. Even though the games were sometimes hard to watch, it was always a way we were together as a family.
I will share one story about Jeremy. We were visiting him when he lived in LA. We went to one of his friend’s apartments to watch the Lions play. We didn’t know any of them but we were enjoying being there. The Lions lost the game in the last minutes of play. Jeremy stormed out of the place, leaving us wondering when he was going to come back and get us. I think he may have been gone 20 minutes.
[Editor’s Note: Important context here is that this was the Lions/Bears “Calvin Johnson rule” game in 2010 .]
Jeremy and his dad’s passion for Lions football was such a wonderful bonding experience. It makes me sad that he isn’t here to see what the Lions and Jeremy have accomplished in the last few years.
I was able to attend the Pride of Detroit meet and greet a few weeks ago. It was wonderful meeting his colleagues and Pride of Detroit followers. Please go next time he has one. What could be better than friends, drinks, food, and football?
To end I will tell you what I text Jeremy every game day. GO LIONS!!!!!!!
