Everyone has heard about the “Super Bowl hangover”, where the team that loses the Super Bowl in the previous season struggles to even make it back to the postseason the following year. 2024 may be bringing in a new type of hangover, at least temporarily, and it involves the Detroit Lions.
The Lions have lately been beating teams up well enough that it carries over into the following week. Following the Seattle Seahawks’ 29-20 loss to the New York Giants in Week 5, teams facing the Lions the previous week have now lost their following game in four consecutive weeks . Some of those games haven’t been close. The Seahawks have been the closest of the four.
- Week 2: Rams (following Week 1 loss to Lions) lose 41-10 to Cardinals
- Week 3: Buccaneers (following Week 2 win over Lions) lose 26-7 to Broncos
- Week 4: Cardinals (following Week 3 loss to Lions) lose 42-14 to Commanders
- Week 5: Seahawks (following Week 4 loss to Lions) lose 29-20 to Giants
The Lions had their bye in Week 5. It also turns out that the Cowboys, Detroit’s Week 6 opponent, has their bye in Week 7, so you could say there are two chances for this streak to continue in Week 8 — the Cowboys play at San Francisco, the Vikings have a Thursday game against the Rams.
