Which Lions player is currently being slept on and could surprise some folks in 2024?
The Detroit Lions are heading into the 2024 regular season with high expectations, and many are expecting them to win their division for a second year in a row, with possibly another deep playoff run in sight. It’s well-deserved hype after last year’s success, and after another solid offseason from general manager Brad Holmes, the roster is looking even better than it was at this time last year.
But with a stacked roster, some players can fly under the radar, especially when it comes to the national media. And in some cases, players can come out of nowhere and even surprise the local media and Lions fans.
Today’s Question of the Day is…
Which Detroit Lions player(s) are people sleeping on this year?
There are a few names that immediately come to mind, and at the top of the list for me is Amik Robertson. With such a huge overhaul to the secondary this offseason, I think Robertson is the name that people often forget about when piecing together the new-look secondary.
Is Robertson going to start right away? No, probably not. But I think that these roles are not completely set in stone and we have all of training camp to find out and see. All it takes is one injury to see him slot back into the lineup, and when the Lions inevitably move Brian Branch over to safety in some packages, then Robertson has a pretty good chance to get some slot corner reps—though he’ll have some competition there with Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Some other players I considered here are Josh Paschal and Derrick Barnes. Paschal should get a lot of looks on the edge and if he can stay healthy, I think he’s going to surprise some folks. And Barnes might see a decrease in his role as Jack Campbell likely gets more responsibilities this year, but I don’t think we can completely discount him with how much he improved last year and how well he played in big moments. It sure is nice to see the Lions have so much depth at linebacker.
