The Detroit Lions have signed yet another cornerback as their defensive backfield is rife with injuries.
The injury bug continues to plague the Detroit Lions ’ secondary. After missing a couple of practices with a hamstring injury, defensive back Morice Norris has been waived with an injury designation. In response to the injuries, the team also announced on Wednesday that they have signed cornerback Javelin Guidry.
Right now, the Lions are very shorthanded in the defensive backfield. Last week, they lost Emmanuel Moseley for an extended period of time due to a torn pectoral. During Monday’s practice, both Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw left practice with an injury (although, it seems they’ve avoided major injury ). And now Norris is out. If Norris passes through waivers, he’ll revert to the Lions’ injured reserve.
Guidry is the Lions’ second cornerback addition in as many days. On Tuesday, they signed Essang Bassey—a veteran nickelback—to help with the lack of depth .
Guidry went undrafted in 2020 and has been on five different teams since—spending time with the Jets, Cardinals, Raiders, Eagles, Falcons, and last year with the Jets again. Over his four-year career, he’s made 32 game appearances and five starts, although he hasn’t seen the field since 2022 after suffering a season-ending knee injury in training camp last year. At 5-foot-9, 191 pounds, he has the versatility and the experience to play both the outside and the nickel spot.
Given the Lions’ depth of injuries in the defensive backfield, don’t be surprised if the Lions throw Guidry into the fire. He could see playing time in Saturday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs .
