In April, Bob Quinn was championing Connor Cook as a quarterback with “immense talent.”
On Monday, Quinn showed Cook the door.
The Detroit Lions waived Cook, the former Michigan State standout, on Monday and signed David Fales to be their No. 3 quarterback for training camp.
Cook signed a futures deal with the Lions in January in hopes of resurrecting his career, but he spent all spring as the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Matthew Stafford and Tom Savage.
Neither Savage nor Cook impressed during last week’s mandatory minicamp, but Savage, who played for new Lions quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan with the Houston Texans, has long been the favorite for the No. 2 job.
Asked about Cook last month, Ryan said he’d done a good job learning the new system.
“He works very hard,” Ryan said. “He’s getting a command of the offense like all these guys are working to do that. I think Connor’s moving along and progressing in that way. All of us, starting this offense and getting into it, we’re all getting better every day and he’s one of them.”

A fourth-round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2016, Cook has appeared in just two games in his career while playing for four teams.
He completed 14 of 21 passes in relief of starter Matt McGloin in a Week 17 of his rookie season, then started a playoff loss for the Raiders the following week.
Cut by Oakland at the end of training camp last year, Cook spent time on the practice squad with the Cincinnati Bengals and Carolina Panthers before signing with the Lions.
Fales spent parts of the last two seasons with the Miami Dolphins after starting his NFL career with the Chicago Bears. He last appeared in a game in 2017.
The Lions also signed free agent offensive lineman Luke Bowanko and waived safety David Jones on Monday.
The team has four organized team activity practices scheduled this week before breaking for the summer.
