The Detroit Lions signed a kicker from the UFL this week.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter , the Lions have signed kicker Jake Bates. Bates visited the Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Washington Commanders before opting to sign with the Lions.
Bates spent the 2024 UFL season with the Michigan Panthers and converted on 17-of-22 field goals, including three from 60+ yards. His longest kick came from 64 yards during Michigan’s first game against St. Louis.
He joins Michael Badgley and James Turner as the Lions now have three kickers on the roster.
Badgley made all four of his field goal attempts for the Lions in 2023, including one from 51 yards out. It was his second season with the Lions after appearing in 12 games with them during the 2022 season.
Turner is a rookie and has not kicked in an NFL game yet, much like Bates.
The Lions are shaping up to have a good kicking competition for the upcoming 2024 season. It’ll be something to watch throughout training camp and the preseason.
The Lions are coming off a loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. They’re looking for more this season.
