The Detroit Lions are bringing back QB Jake Fromm and WR Donovan Peoples-Jones to their practice squad.
The Detroit Lions continue to fill out their practice squad, and the latest reports highlight two interesting additions. According to Jordan Schultz, the Lions are signing Donovan Peoples-Jones back to the practice squad . And according to Mike Garafolo, Detroit is also signing quarterback Jake Fromm to the practice squad.
The stories of these two players couldn’t be any different. Peoples-Jones was acquired by the Lions via trade in the middle of the 2023 season. He entered this offseason as one of the favorites to win a starting receiver job in replacement of Josh Reynolds. Unfortunately, he struggled in most of training camp and was a complete no-show in the preseason, catching just two of nine targets.
The Lions appeared to fill Peoples-Jones’ role on the roster by reportedly signing former Broncos receiver Tim Patrick to their practice squad . However, by bringing Peoples-Jones back, they are clearly showing some faith that he’ll eventually turn the corner in Detroit.
Fromm, on the other hand, was never really supposed to be on the roster at all. He was added in the middle of the preseason while Hendon Hooker recovered from a concussion. Hooker ended up recovering faster than expected and played in all three preseason games. The writing appeared to be on the wall for Fromm, but Detroit opted to play him in the final two drives of the preseason finale. Fromm responded in a big way, completing 6-of-8 passes for 89 yards, leading Detroit to a field goal and a drive that milked the rest of the clock for a victory.
Lions coach Dan Campbell admitted Fromm really impressed him, especially considering he got literally no team reps in practice prior to his play in the preseason.
“Man, I like Fromm”, Campbell said. “The kid can play a little ball, there’s something about him. He understands where his answers are at, what to do with the football.”
Campbell later added, “It’s encouraging. It’s good to see, and I know this. He’s got my antenna up. I mean, I see him. So, what does that mean? I don’t quite know yet, but I know this is that he’s intriguing. He’s got a little football player in him.”
As of now, the Lions have Jared Goff and Hooker on their 53-man roster—and Fromm on their practice squad. It’s unclear if Detroit has any intention on bringing back veteran Nate Sudfeld in any capacity.
