Detroit Lions injury updates: 2 players leave training camp practice

Detroit Lions injury updates from training camp on John Cominsky, Netane Muti, and Christian Mahogany.

The Detroit Lions were hit by the injury bug a bit during Tuesday’s training camp practice. Two players—defensive end John Cominsky and offensive guard Netane Muti—were being treated by medical officials and did not appear to return to practice.

Cominsky was carted off the field after appearing to get rolled up on during a team drill. After initially trying to walk off under his own power, he couldn’t and went back down to the ground. Shortly thereafter, Cominsky was forced to be carted off the field. The Lions’ official update on Cominsky’s injury is that it’s a left knee issue.

Cominsky had been regularly repping with the third team defense, but he’s been a key player for Detroit over the past two seasons. Over that time, he’s 19 games, tallied 66 tackles, 6.0 sacks, and four passes defended. He earned a two-year extension after the 2022 seasons, but took a pay cut this offseason .

Muti is dealing with a left shoulder injury. He has been regularly repping on the second-team offense opposite the team’s other veteran guard Kayode Awosika. Muti was immediately replaced by recently-signed offensive lineman Ike Boettger.

Lions rookie Ennis Rakestraw spent a few moments with trainers toward the end of practice, but the young cornerback said he was just “a little fatigued.” Center Frank Ragnow had a small scare, coming up liming on one rep. But after missing just a couple plays meeting with a trainer, he was back in there for the rest of practice.

Outside of those in-practice injuries, a few other players were absent or limited.

Absent:

  • G Christian Mahogany (Non-Football Injury)
  • DT DJ Reader (Physically Unable to Perform)
  • RB Zonovan Knight (unknown)
  • WR Jalon Calhoun (unknown)

Mahogany remains out with an illness, and coach Dan Campbell offered a vague update on him.

“It’s a real thing, you know, this illness,” Campbell said. “It really is a day by day—we have virtually checked him in so he’s virtually in meetings and things of that nature but man, when we know he’s ready to get here and be a part of what we’re doing, believe us, we’ll get him here as fast as possible, but as of right now, we have to assume we don’t have him.”

Knight and Calhoun are new absences to practice, while Reader is not expected to return to practice in the upcoming week or two.

Limited

  • DB Brian Branch
  • S C.J. Moore

Branch appears to be getting close to participating in full. He was in full pads Tuesday for the first time, but he’s still being held out of team drills. On Saturday, he said he was hoping to join in toward the end of the week .

Moore was on a similar plan. He did not participate in team or special teams drills, and instead was working with a trainer on the side during that portion of practice.
