We chat with Colts reporter Zak Keefer about the latest Lions GM candidate.
With the first significant domino falling on Wednesday afternoon when the Denver Broncos hired George Paton as their next general manager, it’s realistic to expect things to move significantly quicker for the Detroit Lions in their search.
One candidate who has emerged this week is Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds. Dodds has one of the best reputations out there, having helped build a championship team during his long tenure within the Seattle Seahawks organization then helping the Indianapolis Colts undergo a quick turnaround. He also happens to be one of the most popular choices among Lions fans for the job.
Dodds is another candidate that is not so forward facing with the media, though, and that leads to little understanding of who Dodds is as a person and what role he’s played within the organization.
Luckily, The Athletic’s Zak Keefer is one of few reporters who Dodds has let into his world a bit. Keefer wrote this fantastic bio on Dodds back in 2019 , so we had to go out and get him for this week’s podcast.
During our conversation, we talked about why Dodds has been so selective with interviews, where his philosophy lies in terms of player acquisition, and just how much credit he deserves for the situations in both Seattle and Indy. And we try to answer the most important question of all: will he be a fit in Detroit?
After our conversation, Ryan and I discuss the latest news and rumors regarding the Lions’ GM and coach search and give our thoughts on who the hires should be.
