Detroit Lions WR Tom Kennedy has signed back to the practice squad, while rookie WR Dylan Drummond is out.

The Detroit Lions announced on Wednesday that veteran receiver Tom Kennedy has re-signed to the team’s practice squad. To make room on the squad, the Lions waived rookie receiver Dylan Drummond.

Kennedy has been on and off the team’s 53-man roster and practice squad for the last four seasons. He was set to make another run at the final roster this year, but suffered a serious upper-body injury in training camp that initially landed him on injured reserve. After reaching an injury settlement with the team, he was released. Now he’s back in Detroit.

Since initially joining the team in 2019, Kennedy has made a total of 20 game appearances for the Lions. In that time, he has caught 14 passes for 195 yards and nine first downs. Additionally, he threw a gorgeous 75-yard touchdown pass to Kalif Raymond on a trick play back in 2021 .

It’s unlikely Kennedy sees time on the 53-man roster anytime soon. The Lions just recently traded for Donovan Peoples-Jones, and they already have a receiver room full of productive members, including Josh Reynolds, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Raymond and rookie Antoine Green. That said, Kennedy is a player this coaching staff trusts, and could be a nice depth piece if the Lions incur any injuries at the position.

“You never know when your number’s going to be called,” coach Dan Campbell said back in December of 2022. “One of the reasons [Kennedy] goes to the game is because he can play multiple roles for us, mentally and physically he can do some things.”
