The Detroit Lions’ most immediate needs entering the NFL Draft are an EDGE prospect to pair with Aidan Hutchinson and an offensive line replacement for Kevin Zeitler. After securing his first pick of the draft, Brad Holmes can now focus on day 2 targets.
Detroit Lions Draft Targets
Although talented LB Jihaad Campbell and controversial EDGE Mike Green were still available when Detroit was on the clock, Brad Holmes selected a surprise under-the-radar sleeper. Instead of acquiring the more predictable option, Holmes drafted OSU defensive tackle Tyleik Williams with the 28th pick.
At 6’3” 334 lbs, Williams fills an immediate need for the Lions’ injury-ravaged defense. He provides a powerful presence on the interior line and is a sturdy and resilient three-down player. A disruptive force, Williams was a member of OSU’s 2024 National Championship team . Although he is primarily a run-stopper, he is fast and has an impressive initial burst of speed. Under defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s coaching, Williams could develop into an effective pass rusher.
Day 2 Draft Targets for the Lions
After strengthening the Lions’ interior defense, Holmes can now focus on his top priority, acquiring an EDGE. However, by the time the Lions have their first pick with the 60th overall selection, top EDGE prospects Donovan Ezeiruaku and Nic Scourton will be off the board. Either of these prospects would be a huge plus for Detroit. However, Holmes most likely has his eye on a different EDGE prospect.
Lions Draft Target Josaiah Stewart (DE, University of Michigan)
At 6’1″ 249 lbs, Josaiah Stewart isn’t the typical EDGE prospect. However, he plays with fierce aggression and an unrelenting contact effort. An explosive, strong player who is fun to watch, Stewart gets in there and mixes it up. With 71 tackles (45 solo), 14 sacks, two pass defenses, and two forced fumbles, Stewart was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and Second Team-All Big Ten.
Scoring a 6.30 at the combine, Stewart made a great impression. Lance Zierlein summarized, “Despite a lack of size and length, the right ingredients are in place for Stewart to become an impactful starter within his first few years in the league.”
A Uof M grad, Stewart shares the same foundational background as Aidan Hutchinson. The two perfectly complement each other. Furthermore, Stewart was the only prospect to have met with the Lions three times: as a “Top-30 Pre-Draft” prospect, at a local Pro-Day invitational, and in a virtual meeting.
Lions Draft Target J.T. Tuimoloau (DE, Ohio State University)
Another member of the Ohio State University’s Championship team, T.J. Tuimoloau , was a member of the nation’s number one-rated defense. 6’5” tall and weighing 269 lbs. Tuimoloau was named All-Big Ten Conference First Team three consecutive years. In 2024, he recorded 61 tackles (35 solo), 12.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and three pass defenses. In 2022, Tuimoloau was sensational in a game against Penn State, where he posted 21 points with six tackles (three TFLs), two sacks, two interceptions, one pass defense, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in that single game.
A versatile athlete, Tuimoloau is equally strong defending against the run and passing game. Although he lacks explosive speed, he’s a strong, productive tackle who would complement Hutchinson nicely.
Lions Draft Target Jack Sawyer (DE, Ohio State University)
At 6’4″ 260 lb. Jack Sawyer is a star on the nation’s number one-ranked defense. In the Cotton Bowl, after memorably strip-sacking Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and running the ball back 83 yards for a touchdown, Sawyer became an instant hero. At his best in high-pressure situations, Sawyer can be counted on to bring fierce intensity when it is needed most. A strong pass rusher, he posted 4.5 sacks and six quarterback pressures during OSU’s 4-game championship playoff series.
Sawyer uses his hands well as a force-based rusher with good instincts. Although he lacks speed and bendability, he keeps his feet moving and remains out of reach. A two-time captain, Sawyer has the type of work ethic and leadership skills that would make him a solid fit with the Lions.
Either of these EDGE prospects is a strong fit for the Lions. However, Holmes, the master strategist, might have a few more surprises in store.
