Will he be a first-ballot Hall of Famer?
On Wednesday afternoon, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the nominees for their 2021 class. The list consists of 130 modern-era player, including 14 players who are eligible for the first time. To be eligible, a player must be retired from football for at least five year.
The most notable name on the list for the Detroit Lions —and also the least surprising—is wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Also on the list for the first time are quarterback Peyton Manning , cornerback Charles Woodson , running back Steven Jackson and defensive end Jared Allen , among many others.
According to the Hall, this list will be trimmed to 25 in November, then reduced to 15 finalists in January. From there, the selection process will enshrine somewhere between four and eight new member, per the press release.
