In approximately 35 minutes, Michigan went from winning its first Big Ten Tournament Championship since 2018 to looking ahead to what’s next. The Wolverines earned a place as a No. 5 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament, set to face No. 12 seed UC San Diego in the first round in Denver.
The regular season and Big West tournament champions, the Tritons are a tough draw for Michigan, as they led the country in turnover margin this year. They’re led by a unique star in guard/forward Anawania Tait-Jones, who averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season. Should the Wolverines get past UC San Diego, they’ll face the winner of No. 4 seed Texas A&M and No. 13 seed Yale in the second round.
“I was planning to study them (in the offseason),” Michigan coach Dusty May said of the Tritons. “Thank goodness our season is not over, where we start our offseason studies, either. I met their coach on the road recruiting because they’ve had immediate success after their transition (from Division II). … I’ve heard great things, and they’re known as being a really, really good basketball team.”
