When the Michigan men’s basketball team found itself down five with just a few minutes remaining against Penn State, the Wolverines turned to junior point guard Tre Donaldson. Heating up when his team needed him most, Donaldson scored Michigan’s final seven points to round out a gritty 76-72 win at home and improve to 15-5 on the season, with a 6-2 record in the Big Ten.
Donaldson led all scorers with 21 points, showcasing his versatility and composure as the Wolverines stormed back from a six-point deficit in the final minutes. He also registered seven assists, four steals, and three rebounds, all while committing no turnovers. After Friday’s rout at No. 11 Purdue in which he had just one assist and six turnovers, Donaldson did more than bounce back — he shined.
“It meant so much,” Donaldson said postgame. “Because it was something we needed for our team. I mean, going on the road and getting a loss like that, (this win) was just something that we needed. And I was just happy. God gave me an opportunity to do it for these guys. And it was just exciting.”
Michigan found a way to respond at home, demonstrating both resilience and focus as they battled the Nittany Lions through a back-and-forth contest.
“We know who we are,” Donaldson said. “(The Purdue loss) was out of character. Obviously, they got to come and play us again. So I’m looking forward to that. It was just all about response. It was just all about, ’how can we respond to the game?’”
