Washington Fan’s Sign Going Viral Before National Championship Game

January 9, 2024 by The Spun

SEATTLE, WA – SEPTEMBER 17: Washington fans ran onto the field and celebrated at the 50-yard line after upsetting the #10 ranked Michigan Spartans 39-28 during a college football game between the Washington Huskies and the Michigan State Spartans on September 17, 2022 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, WA. A Washington fan went for the obvious Michigan joke when attending Monday’s National Championship Game.

While hardly innovative , a Huskies supporter mocked the Wolverines’ sign-stealing scandal at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

“I had a better sign, but Michigan stole it!” the sign reads . “Go Dawgs!”

Sometimes simple can be effective. The sign is at least better than the fan’s cringeworthy “Harbaugh has no Penix” shirt.

No, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh does not have Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. on his football team. Penix will lead college football’s top-ranked passing offense against the sport’s No. 1 defense in Houston.

But Harbaugh does have a pretty good signal-caller in J.J. McCarthy, who has completed 73.2 percent of his passes and thrown 22 touchdowns to just four interceptions this season.

Meanwhile, head coach Kalen DeBoer and the Huskies staff probably went to great lengths to ensure their opponents can’t lift any signals during Monday’s game.

Former staffer Connor Stalions purchased tickets to dozens of games involving future Big Ten opponents to scout them in person. He allegedly bragged about stealing their signs in text messages.

Harbaugh closed the regular season by serving his second three-game suspension amid Michigan’s sign-stealing saga. The Wolverines beat Penn State and Ohio State behind Sherrone Moore before Harbaugh returned to lead a Big Ten Championship Game shutout over Iowa and a Rose Bowl overtime win over Alabama.

Although college football’s biggest story months ago, the fury appears to have subsided this winter. Yet some fans outside of Ann Arbor will never forget or forgive.

The National Championship Game begins at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
