Freshman QB Jadyn Davis made his debut as a Michigan Wolverine, while two other freshmen also made a major impact yesterday against Northwestern. Here is our updated Michigan football redshirt tracker:
We’ve been waiting all season for freshman quarterback Jadyn Davis to get an opportunity under center. While he finally saw the field for the very first time, his first snap was overshadowed by a 20-yard touchdown run from Tavierre Dunlap. Davis never got another chance to show what he can do, as Northwestern’s next drive took up the rest of the clock.
Here’s who’s had a chance to play as a true freshman this season for the Wolverines. An asterisk (*) indicates they saw playing time against Northwestern:
- QB Jadyn Davis (1 game)*
- RB Micah Ka’apana (1 game)*
- RB Jordan Marshall (3 games)*
- WR Channing Goodwin (2 games)*
- OL Andrew Sprague (3 games)*
- OL Jake Guarnera (4 games)
- TE Hogan Hansen (8 games)*
- LB Cole Sullivan (10 games)*
- Edge Dominic Nichols (4 games)
- DL Manuel Beigel (1 game)
- DB Mason Curtis (7 games)*
- DB Jo’ziah Edmond (7 games)*
- DB Jacob Oden (3 games)
Marshall had a huge 63-yard kick return to Northwestern’s 20-yard line, along with his first rush attempts as a Wolverines.
Ka’apana also logged his first snaps in the backfield and had one catch for four yards. The Bishop Gorman graduate rushed for 732 yards and nine touchdowns in his senior season. He was only a three-star recruit, but Michigan has shown it’s got an eye for running backs. Sherrone Moore called him “lightning in a bottle” in his postgame presser, so it sounds like he likes what he’s seen out of Ka’apana as a young running back.
Curtis had another stellar performance, picking up his first interception as a Wolverine and coming away with two tackles. He’s a player who’s getting some needed reps as Michigan prepares for guys like Makari Paige to graduate. Curtis’ play in the secondary as a true freshman is a good sign for the future.
Goodwin, Hansen and Sprague all had snaps on offense. Hansen is back after missing one game with an injury against Indiana. Again, these are three young players that coaches continue to trust on the field more and more, which is a good sign for next season.
Finally, Sullivan and Edmond also had snaps on the defense. We’ve seen Sullivan continue to play on the special teams unit, but this week he had snaps at linebacker, compiling one solo tackle and an assisted tackle. Edmond helped on the defense with a tackle of his own.
The Wolverines will finish out the season on the road in Columbus (noon on FOX).
