Top Transfer’s Destination Could Be the Michigan Wolverines

June 6, 2024 by Howard Brubaker

U-M's new men's basketball head coach Dusty May speaks during introductory press conference at Junge Family Champions Center in Ann Arbor on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

It is by far a new era at the University of Michigan, and now they are looking to add their biggest transfer addition yet.

The shift started with a bang as the Wolverines removed Juwan Howard and hired FAU’s Dusty May as the new man at the head of the table. It has been a very busy offseason for May in his short time in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines have completely reshaped the roster after losing every key contributor from the 23-24 team except for one, Nimari Burnett . May got down to work quickly and has since added big-time players across the board via the transfer portal and a couple of incoming freshmen.

The team has quickly become far better than what their roster outlook was last season after the Wolverines went 8-24—the worst record in the history of the program.

The team does have one final scholarship spot available, and it appears that Coach May might have his eyes on one more very impactful player.

Top Transfer’s Destination Could Be the Michigan Wolverines

Jamir Watkins is one of the highest-rated remaining players still available in the transfer portal, and things appear to be shaping up about where he will play ball in the fall. Watkins was a key contributor for the Florida State Seminoles last season, averaging 15.6 points, six rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Watkins has made it clear he is looking for a new home after officially withdrawing from the NBA Draft.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein has reported that Watkins has trimmed his list of potential destinations to five, including Cincinnati, Kansas State, Oregon, St. John’s, and the biggest name on the list: Michigan.

Wolverines Targeting High-Level Player

To go even further than that, it has now been confirmed by head coach Dusty May that the Wolverines are serious contenders to land Watkins. Or so he implied that Watkins is the type of player they were looking for when he spoke with Brian Boesch on the Defend the Block Podcast earlier this week.

“So we are working with a sense of urgency, but we don’t feel like there’s any panic to add someone just to be adding,” May said. “In our profession, there’s times when you just kind of sit and wait, and you’ll have a potential big-time player that can kind of fall to you because of the situation.”

Things are in motion in Ann Arbor, as Watkins has since made it clear that he will be taking an official visit this weekend.

Watkins Could Be the Final Piece They Need to Contend in 2024-25

Coach May has turned it around quickly in Ann Arbor with key additions across the board. Some of those new players include Vlad Goldin , Roddy Gayle Jr , Rubin Jones , Tre Donaldson , Danny Wolf , and Sam Walters . Now if they can also add Watkins and his high scoring abilities, then the Wolverines are pushing to be contenders near the top of the Big Ten this fall. That is hard to believe after only winning eight games last season.
