Just like many people in Ann Arbor this Friday, NFL legend Tom Brady is operating with a heavy heart. That’s because longtime Michigan athletics counselor Greg Harden passed away .
Harden started working with Michigan’s athletic department in 1986. Over the course of his career he worked with a plethora of elite athletes, such as Brady, Desmond Howard and Michael Phelps.
A few years ago, Brady revealed that Harden was the main reason he stayed at Michigan. His mentorship helped the seven-time Super Bowl champion change his mindset from victim to competitor.
“It was a lot of tough competition and I really had to grow up. I think Greg recognized the state of mind where I was thinking, ‘Is there an easier path for me?’ Greg helped me realize that the path that was best for me was to learn how to take on the obstacles I was facing and to do the best that I could,” Brady explained, via The Detroit News .
With that said, Brady is understandably heartbroken about Harden’s death.
“I’m so sad to hear the news of Greg’s passing,” Brady said . “I’m heartbroken as he was a dear friend and mentor. There are so many beautiful qualities Greg had that endeared him to so many people over his years at Michigan. He meant the world to me and I could never have had the success I had without the time, energy, love and support he had given me. He will be truly missed.”
Harden passed away after complications from surgery. He’s survived by his wife, their three children, and his sister.
“During his time at Michigan, Harden became known in many circles as the school’s ‘Secret Weapon’ for his work behind the scenes helping Wolverines athletes achieve peak performances,” the University of Michigan said. “In the future, they look forward to celebrating Greg’s life with many who were blessed to know him.”
Our thoughts are with Harden’s loved ones.
