Three-star wing Malachi Brown committed to Michigan tonight.
Brown is a 6-foot-5 wing from Tennessee who didn’t have a scholarship offer at the end of the summer. He stood out at the Adidas All-American Camp in early September and started to pick up buzz. He drew rave reviews from 247 Sports’ Eric Bossi and added an offer from UC Santa Barbara.
May was impressed with his play and jumped in with an offer after watching him last week:
While UC Santa Barbara was the first program to offer, May had quietly been doing his homework. He had actually been tipped off about Brown during the summer and had been intrigued by watching him. Last week, May quietly made his way to Knoxville to watch Brown work out in person and immediately offered. The offer was accepted just as quickly as it was given.
“It was amazing for him to come out here in the first place, even if he weren’t going to offer, was still awesome,” said Brown. “That he took his time to come and offer and that I was able to commit was amazing.
“He said I’m like a glue guy who can help the team win and help other people score and create for others. That’s something that I do really well.”
Brown is known for his positional size and defensive ability :
Brown is the very definition of a late-bloomer. A long and wiry strong southpaw, he’s got a great frame to build on and some good base skills on the offensive end. He can slash in transition, has the makings of a good jump shooter but where he excels the most is on the defensive end.
“I think I play defense really well, that’s always been my main thing. With the Tennessee Impact I played with a big ol’ four-star Trey Thompson and some other great players I was never a first option to go score. So it was always cool getting those steals or making great passes just to help my team.
Brown is Michigan’s third commitment in the 2026 class, joining four-star Quinn Costello and international big man Marcus Moller .
May has been aggressive in pursuing under-the-radar targets in the past. The Wolverine staff took LJ Cason with them from Florida Atlantic, and he played a key role as a freshman. The Wolverines also signed Patrick Liburd in the spring, a decommitment from Coastal Carolina, in the 2025 class.
Brown fits a similar development profile as a defensive-first wing who might not have a lot of exposure but has impressed scouts.
