The Wolverines are defined by their young squad. But at times, that youth can be a detriment just as much as an advantage.
On a four-game win streak after defeating Indiana on Feb 12, the Michigan women’s basketball team finally found the consistency it’s craved all season. Earlier in the year, the Wolverines couldn’t pull away in close games, competing with top teams for three quarters before falling apart in the fourth. Michigan began playing complete games, and its win over Indiana (17-10 Overall, 9-7 Big Ten) was a testament to that.
Since that matchup, the Wolverines (19-9 Overall, 10-7) have lost two games. The first was a familiar formula at the hands of No. 21 Maryland (21-6, 11-5) on Feb 17, keeping things tight until the fourth quarter and ultimately failing to execute in crunch time. Michigan won on Saturday, a senior night victory against Penn State (10-17, 1-15)— last in the Big Ten — by just ten points. But on Wednesday, the Wolverines couldn’t come back against Iowa (19-9, 9-8), shaving a 21-point deficit down to just six but unable to sustain that push.
Let’s break down two of Michigan’s recent games:
