Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore spoke to the media on Monday and discussed the quarterback competition between Bryce Underwood and Mikey Keene.

Spring practices are underway for the Michigan Wolverines football team and there is a lot to figure out before the season begins on Aug. 30. While there are numerous position battles taking place, the quarterback competition will be receiving plenty of intrigue throughout the spring and summer.

Michigan has two new options at quarterback who could ultimately be named the starting quarterback in true freshman Bryce Underwood and Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene. Underwood and Keene present a contrast in terms of where each is at in their collegiate career. Underwood has yet to play a snap but is a five-star prospect and was the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 class. Keene has lots of experience to the tune of 8,245 passing yards, but is the upside of Underwood too good to pass up?

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said that the quarterbacks are all working hard and that reps are currently “pretty balanced” at the position. Moore also noted that Underwood is already making strides during his time at Michigan as an early enrollee.

“It’s been good,” Moore said. “Adjusting to things and doing things a little bit different, but he’s done well. He works his tail off, he’s in here late, in here early.”

Moore also talked about what Keene brings to the table. Moore mentioned that he remembers evaluating Keene last summer while Keene was the starting quarterback at Fresno State, Michigan’s Week 1 opponent, and Moore thought Keene was “pretty good” and someone who could make all the throws.

“He’s played the most snaps in college football on our team. Over 2,000 something snaps,” Moore said. “A guy that’s played a lot of football. Understands the moments, understands the big moments. Understands what it takes to be really good. He’s been a great addition to our football program.”

As far as when Michigan could name a starting quarterback, they’re not in an immediate rush and are willing to let things play out naturally.

“It’s a feeling — the guy that’s making the most plays, that has the command of the offense and command of the team,” Moore said.
