In a recent interview with On3, Michigan Football head coach Sherrone Moore revealed when fans should expect a starting QB to be named for the Wolverines:
The main storyline for the Michigan Wolverines this offseason, undoubtedly, is the quarterback position. Two young players are competing this spring while the veteran waits to get back on the field, so now a lot will probably be known for a few months still.
Thankfully, head coach Sherrone Moore and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey have plenty of time to decide who their starting quarterback will be. There’s no rush to make a decision, as there are still four months and a fall camp to get through until the Wolverines’ Week 1 game against New Mexico at the Big House.
But now we are finding out when exactly we should expect to know who Michigan’s starting quarterback will be this fall. Moore recently spoke with On3’s J.D. PicKell and gave a firm timeline of when fans will know who the guy is for the 2025 season.
“I feel like it usually carries into fall camp,” Moore said. “All the real good battles that I’ve been a part of — you can say something in spring, but then it changes so we want to take our time with the process of who that person is … so for us, it’s probably gonna go into fall camp and then probably a week before the game, the first game, make a decision and make the announcement then.”
The contenders this year are five-star true freshman Bryce Underwood, redshirt freshman Jadyn Davis and Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene. By all accounts, it appears Underwood has been performing very well in spring ball. Keene has been dealing with an undisclosed injury, so Davis has taken advantage of the reps this spring and has greatly improved from where he was at a season ago.
“I think (the quarterback job is) open still,” he said. “I’m excited to see what happens in the spring game and excited to see how rolls into the summer and in fall camp. All those guys have — I’d say Jadyn Davis has really taken huge steps … played really more confident, you can see the glimpses of things he did in high school really show up in spring ball. Been proud of his progress and what he’s done and made the competition even better.”
Mark your calendars for Monday, Aug. 25 — that is the day Moore will likely speak to the local media that week. If the starting quarterback isn’t announced by then, that means plans have changed and we probably won’t know who the starter is until the Wolverines take the field for warmups against New Mexico.
