Sherrone Moore gave injury updates for QB Mikey Keene and S Rod Moore on this week’s In the Trenches. It sure sounds like both will be ready to go for the start of the season:
Sherrone Moore is preparing for his second spring as head coach of the Michigan Wolverines. He has a few key players working through injuries this spring, but gave promising answers when asked about safety Rod Moore and quarterback Mikey Keene on “In the Trenches” this week.
Rod Moore was supposed to be a crucial piece of Michigan’s secondary in 2024. Returning to the team with leadership experience and impressive football IQ, but a torn ACL sidelined him for the entire year, and most of spring camp.
Jon Jansen asked Sherrone Moore directly if Rod Moore is expected on the field this fall. Sherrone said Rod is “trending in a super positive direction.” He also expects him to be in a good spot for summer workouts and fall camp.
While that’s not necessarily the most positive news, it sounds better than the typical “working through some things.” The willingness to address some sort of timeframe seems somewhat positive.
In 2023, Moore had 38 total tackles and two interceptions for 38 yards, one of which was pretty gosh darn memorable.

It’s not just the fans excited to have Rod Moore back on the field. Sherrone Moore says he watched him as a leader off the field, and he’s gone through so much, it’s exciting he’ll be able to play again. Sherrone said Rod did have to get another surgery, but that “he’s felt the best he’s ever felt.”
Another player dealing with an injury is Keene. He did not play in the spring game over the weekend, but Moore told Jansen, “He’s throwing right now. He’ll be full go and available in June.” Moore expects Keene to be able to do everything with the team starting in June.
Moore didn’t give a timeline for choosing a starting quarterback, essentially saying the team will just know at some point who’s going to lead the team. We expect a healthy Keene to be in the mix — he completed 70.5 percent of his passes in 2024 and threw for 2,892 yards, 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for Fresno State.
You don’t want to see any players at key positions working through injuries, but it does feel encouraging that Keene and Rod Moore seem to have clearer timelines on recovery than we heard last year. Sherrone Moore sharing more information on them seems to be positive.
