Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore hasn’t declared his Week 9 starting quarterback.
The Wolverines fell to 4-3 following Saturday’s 21-7 loss to Illinois. After replacing Alex Orji in their previous loss at Washington, Jack Tuttle completed 20 of 32 passes for 208 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.
When speaking to reporters on Monday, Moore kept his plans concealed for Saturday night’s Big Ten matchup against Michigan State.
“We’ll see as we practice this week,” Moore said, via Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press.
However, he later offered a stronger indication of his thought process on the Inside Michigan Football radio show.
“I think right now, Jack would be the guy,” Moore said, per Angelique Chengelis
of The Detroit News. “But you have to go through the week and see what happens.”
After winning a national championship behind J.J. McCarthy, Michigan opened the 2024 season with Davis Warren under center. The senior threw two interceptions in a lopsided home loss to Michigan and three more against Arkansas State before getting benched.
Orji has completed 23 of 43 passes for 148 yards. He mustered 86 passing yards in a narrow 27-24 win over Minnesota at Ann Arbor.
Moore later handed the offense to Tuttle, who has coughed up an interception and a fumble in consecutive games. That lack of ball security has the head coach reconsidering his options.
“You can’t turn the ball over,” Moore said, per Garcia . “You don’t want to go to four quarterbacks. You don’t want to have to go through this process, but you got to take care of the football. We’re going to see what we have to do and have that conversation as we go.”
Time is dwindling for Moore to choose a starter before Saturday’s game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET.
