Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore met with the media on Monday afternoon to preview the matchup with the Fresno State Bulldogs this weekend. He spoke at length about standout players, the ongoing quarterback competition between Alex Orji and Davis Warren, and much more.
Here are some of the key things he had to say.
- While the coaching staff is “close” to making a decision, no starting quarterback has been named just yet. However, Moore did confirm Alex Orji and Davis Warren are the top options as of now.
- Moore said “we’ll see” regarding two quarterbacks playing. He mentioned Tim Tebow and Chris Leak having success for Florida in the late 2000s, but he’s seen a two-quarterback system not work at places as well. “We’re going to do whatever it takes to win.”
- Moore mentioned Fresno State quarterback Mikey Keene as a player to watch on offense for the Bulldogs. He also mentioned the defense needing to throw different things his way in an effort to confuse him and “make it messy for him.”
- Regarding keeping a one-track mind and not looking ahead to Texas, Moore said
- Linebacker Jimmy Rolder has “all the talent in the world to be a top linebacker in the country,” and he has had a great fall camp, according to Moore. Rolder is expected to be among the first linebackers off the bench this year for Michigan.
- Moore shouted out Zeke Berry a couple times when asked about the secondary. He has made some “wow plays” in camp and appears to be in line for a lot of playing time. Also mentioned Brandyn Hillman as a player with “elite traits that people haven’t seen yet” and has taken his game to “the next level.”
- As it pertains to tomorrow’s release of the Connor Stalions documentary on Netflix and whether or not he will tune in, Moore said he will be “watching film” tomorrow.
- Redshirt freshman Evan Link and redshirt sophomore Andrew Gentry are the top two options for the right tackle position as of now. Meanwhile, redshirt juniors Greg Crippen and Dominic Giudice are the top two options for the starting center job.
- Fred Moore, Kendrick Bell and CJ Charleston are the top guys for the WR3 job right now.
- Redshirt freshman Jyaire Hill is officially the second starting cornerback, opposite Will Johnson. He was battling transfers Aamir Hall and Ricky Johnson, among others at the position, this offseason.
- Marlin Klein has established himself as one of the top tight ends, along with Colston Loveland — duh — and Max Bredeson. He was named to Bruce Feldman’s college football freaks list this offseason, so perhaps he is in line for some significant playing time as well.
- One player not being talked about enough, according to Moore, is redshirt junior edge TJ Guy. He has received multiple shoutouts by coaches and players this offseason, so he seems to be in line for some more playing time this year.
