Michigan Wolverines pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy has continued to collaborate with offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell on a daily basis, with hopes of improving a slumping offense, particularly the pass attack.
Earlier this week, Bellamy analyzed why the passing game hasn’t been able to find much success and how the coaching staff is striving to fix it.
“(Campbell and I) talk every day, getting together and me giving suggestions and ideas from the way I see it,” Bellamy said. “Just trying to figure out what’s the best way. We look at our players, what we’re capable of and give suggestions from that standpoint. We all just have to play collectively and together. We have to do a better job executing.”
A significant aspect of Bellamy’s role as pass game coordinator involves strategizing with Campbell to create a cohesive game plan that aligns with the offense’s strengths. Michigan’s passing game has been lackluster all season long, and Bellamy is surprised at the lack of production from the receiving corps.
“In our receiver room, the one thing we constantly talk about is when opportunities present themselves, you have to make the plays and do what you can for us to win. We haven’t done enough of that this year,” Bellamy said. “I challenge myself every day. How can I be better, how can we be better, and just make sure that we execute at a higher level?”
Bellamy attributes some of the problems on offense to execution inconsistencies, including timing and route running. In order to ensure the pass game complements the run game, Bellamy emphasized the importance of synergy between all the offensive units.
“From protection, to quarterback, to receiver, and even the coaches, we have to be more detailed,” Bellamy said. “Everybody is doing it together, and that’s how we’re going to get this thing rolling. That’s our mindset. As you’re game planning, you try to use the defense’s aggression against them. We’re striving every day in practice and meetings.”
Bellamy and the Wolverines are hoping to reignite the passing attack and avoid pivotal turnovers later tonight against Michigan State. The Wolverines will try to overcome their problems on offense, and Bellamy is cognizant that improvement requires a collective effort from everyone in the program.
