Report: Michigan to host Tennessee in October exhibition

July 16, 2025 by UM Hoops

As first reported by Vol Quest’s Grant Ramey , Michigan is expected to host Tennessee for an exhibition game in October.

The Wolverines are also expected to play a preseason game against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden.

Both games are expected to be public and open to the public, a product of the NCAA relaxing rules on preseason exhibition contests between Division I teams. Last year, the Wolverines faced Oakland (in Detroit) and hosted Toledo for preseason exhibitions.

Michigan last faced Tennessee in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, a 76-68 U-M win, while Dusty May knocked the Vols out of the Sweet Sixteen the following season during his run to the Final Four at Florida Atlantic.

Tennessee and St. John’s are both expected to be top-15 teams nationally and should provide challenging preseason tests for the Wolverines.

Michigan’s non-conference schedule is expected to be one of the more difficult slates in the country . The Wolverines will host Villanova, travel to TCU, play Wake Forest in Detroit, and face off against Duke in Washington, D.C. in February. Michigan will also participate in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, featuring games against San Diego State and Auburn, along with a third opponent determined by the results.
