A member of Michigan’s basketball team is reportedly already on his way out the door following Juwan Howard’s firing.
Per Joe Tipton of On3.com, Wolverines freshman guard George Washington III has informed the outlet that he plans to enter the transfer portal. The former three-star recruit is averaging just 1.2 points, 0.3 boards and 0.3 assists in 6.6 minutes of action so far this year.
UofM decided to part ways with its beloved “Fab Five” member after an unbelievably disappointing 8-24 season that included nine straight losses to round out the calendar.
In a statement on his departure, Howard thanked the school that’s meant so much to him. Saying, “Michigan will always be a significant part of my legacy and I will be a significant part of theirs.”
The former NBA All-Star spent five seasons coaching his alma mater in Ann Arbor winning a Big Ten championship, AP National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year Award in 2021.
He led Big Blue to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances and had them one win away from making the Final Four.
Howard underwent a scheduled heart procedure late last year and returned to Michigan’s bench on Dec. 16. However, the Wolverines would go on to win just two games the rest of the way.
The university owes Howard $3 million according to ESPN.com.
