In yet another bizarre twist to a truly wild 12 months of his life, former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions has suddenly become the acting head coach of the high school football team that recently hired him.
Several weeks ago Stalions was announced as a volunteer defensive coordinator at Detroit Mumford High School under head coach William McMichael. It was Stalions’ first job on a football sideline since he was ousted from the Wolverines amid the sign stealing scandal of last season.
Sadly, things have taken an unfortunate turn for McMichael. According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, McMichael had to be hospitalized last week after suffering “a mild stroke” and has named Stallions the acting head coach in his absence for at least their upcoming game against Hamady High School.
“McMichael said he entered the hospital last Friday, Aug. 30, a day after a season-opening loss to Thurston, and stayed for three days. ‘Connor is leading the team now,’ McMichael texted CBS Sports. McMichael told CBS Sports his return to work is ‘unknown.’ Stalions had been volunteer DC for the Mustangs since around Memorial Day,” Dodd wrote.
McMichael and Stalions had a relationship prior to his hiring. The Detroit Mumford head coach got to know Stalions while Michigan was recruiting his son Jeremiah Beasley to the team.
McMichael has spoken glowingly of Stalions, praising him for how well he knows the game and helping to prepare the high school players for college.
We hope McMichael is doing okay after his hospitalization.
