The Wolverines are kicking off spring practices with a bang this week and weekend, hosting a ton of top ranked recruits for the first time this year. We have that and more in today’s Recruiting Roundup:
Spring has officially sprung in Michigan. Flowers are blooming, temperatures are slowly increasing, and Michigan football has opened its spring practices on Tuesday. Along with welcoming returning players and the freshman class, Michigan is hosting an ever-growing list of recruits this week and weekend.
Local four-star added to the visitor list
According to 247Sports , 2027 four-star tight end Anthony Cartwright is set to visit Ann Arbor on April 3. Cartwright also plans to take visits this spring to Michigan State , UCF, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pounder hails from Detroit Country Day school, where he also plays basketball and baseball. Cartwright is a top-100 recruit (No. 59 overall on 247Sports’ composite) but Michigan may be fighting an uphill battle for his services. His father, Anthony Cartwright Sr., is a Michigan State graduate.
However, getting him on campus is a good sign for Michigan’s chances. There is a long ways to go before Cartwright and the other 2027 class members sign their letter of intent, so the Wolverines will look to keep chipping away until that time comes.
Potential two-way prospect on campus
2027 Marietta (Ga.) athlete Alexander Ward committed verbally to Alabama in November. However, that has not stopped Michigan from trying to entice Ward to flip. Michigan made contact with him over the winter contact period and hosted him — as well as his older brother, 2026 four-star wide receiver Christian Ward — for a visit on Tuesday.
Ward is listed as an athlete and has the potential to play both wide receiver and cornerback in college. In fact, Michigan’s history of using players on both sides of the ball is what makes Michigan intriguing to Ward, according to On3 .
“I’m interested in Michigan because I like the way they let their players be versatile,” Ward said. “They let their players play on both sides. It’s a great opportunity to consider them with me playing on both sides.
“(Michigan) told me they like me at both. I’m excited to see the way the coaches work with the corners and wide receivers. I just want to see how the coach and how the players go through things.”
Ward also recently visited Georgia Tech and is hoping to see LSU, Tennessee and UNLV this spring.
Ohio TE set to visit this weekend
Per 247Sports , Toledo Central Catholic 2026 three-star tight end Preston Fryzel says he will take visits to Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Michigan this week. He will visit the Panthers on Thursday, Buckeyes on Friday, and the Wolverines on Saturday.
Michigan has yet to offer Fryzel, but they have expressed interest.
Fryzel helped Central Catholic win a state title as a sophomore and finish as runner-ups as a junior. He caught 43 passes for 807 yards and 10 touchdowns last fall.
