A top-50 overall prospect and one of the Wolverines’ top targets took a surprise official visit to Michigan over the weekend. We recap that and more in today’s Recruiting Roundup:
The Michigan Wolverines have entered a crucial recruiting period, as they just hosted their first set of official visitors for the month of June. They are set to host a ton of top targets on official visits this month, so the time is now in terms of getting in position to earn some commitments.
Four-star CB takes official visit to Michigan
Michigan got official visit season underway over the weekend with a surprising target on campus, as Davon Benjamin , a top-50 overall prospect and a four-star cornerback, was in Ann Arbor.
On3’s Chad Simmons ($) broke down Benjamin’s recruitment ahead of this visit, and it sounds like there a lot of things Benjamin likes about the program.
“I think the biggest thing is just the combination of the relationship and what he likes about coach Morgan, what they have academically, a chance to get on the field that he sees as an opportunity at Michigan and then just the tradition and history they have as well,” Simmons wrote.
Benjamin has been on a visit to Michigan once before, and he enjoyed his time on campus. The Wolverines pride themselves on having a great culture, and that is something Benjamin noticed this spring.
“That was a very surprising experience because that was my first time being up there,” Benjamin said last month. “So Michigan, seeing it, being there, feeling it, it was actually a great moment. They actually have good people there, and they care about the kids. They take that serious…I’ll say the culture there is amazing.”
Benjamin plans to take official visits to Texas, UNC, Oregon, USC, Washington and Oregon. The Ducks are the current favorite, but having the first official visit is an advantage for the Wolverines.
TE commit discusses why he picked Michigan
Michigan picked up a couple nice commitments during the month of May, and one of them was 2026 three-star tight end Mason Bonner . He had an impressive list of offers, but eventually narrowed down his list to Michigan and Minnesota. At the end of the day, Michigan was the best fit for him.
“Traditionally, it’s just one of those programs,” Bonner’s father, Sherdrick, told On3’s EJ Holland ($) . “You look at the academic piece, and the degree from Michigan is world renowned. Minnesota was right there. It was close … but it was about Michigan’s overall reach and the whole coaching staff reiterating what coach (Steve) Casula was doing. Whether it was Tony (Alford) or Sherrone (Moore) himself, they reached out and let him know what it would mean to them for him to commit. That was the separation right there.”
Moore really impressed Bonner’s family during the recruiting process, and that was a big factor in the decision. It was all about much more than just football.
“Mason has had several conversations with him, and really, none are about football,” Sherdrick said. “It’s bigger than that. That’s the way it comes off to us as a family. It’s bigger than just football for coach Moore … we went to a spring practice, and we weren’t even supposed to be meeting with him. We walked through the hallway, and he stepped outside and talked to us for 25-30 minutes before practice. It’s that easy to engage in conversation with him. You can tell the process is important to him, but being part of a family is even more important.”
Bonner and his family will be back in Ann Arbor for an official visit later this month.
Four-star LB locks in Michigan official visit
Michigan recently scheduled another big official visit for the month of June, as 2026 four-star linebacker Anthony Davis will be in Ann Arbor the weekend of June 13, according to On3’s Simmons ($) .
The Wolverines have some tough competition down south, as he will also take official visits to three SEC schools — Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss . Florida also appears to be a threat.
