One of Michigan’s top QB targets in the 2027 class is aiming to make a decision in the near future. We have that and more in today’s Recruiting Roundup:
August is finally here, and that means two things — the Michigan Wolverines play football this month, and the July dead period on the recruiting calendar is over.
With the season just a few weeks away, there’s plenty of recruiting news to get to. Let’s kick things off with a pair of quarterback targets in the 2027 class.
Four-star QB moving closer to deciding school
In a recent interview with Rivals’ Sam Spiegelman ($), 2027 four-star quarterback Malachi Zeigler said he is “probably looking at a commitment pretty soon.”
Zeigler, who is ranked 156th among 2027 recruits and 12th among quarterbacks on the composite , says that Michigan, Baylor, Mississippi State and SMU are all in the mix.
“To potentially be a good fit at Michigan is definitely exciting to think about,” Zeigler said. “It’s such a historic program and a college football powerhouse. An offer from Michigan means a lot to me. It’s a blessing that a university of that caliber sees potential in me and can picture me in their uniform.”
Zeigler didn’t set a specific commitment date, but he did say his timeline kept moving up with the more schools he’s visited.
Four-star QB: ‘I like Ann Arbor’
Bryce Underwood will get all the attention over the next few seasons, but in terms of the future of the quarterback position, it’s important to establish depth at the position.
One of the quarterbacks Michigan has been pursuing in the 2027 class other than Zeigler is Keegan Croucher, a four-star ranked just outside the Top-100 on the composite . Offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey recently saw Croucher, and it sounds like a good relationship has been established.
“I think, obviously, coach Lindsey has done a great job this offseason to help the quarterback position,” Croucher told The Wolverine’s Ethan McDowell ($). “I think that’s the reason they brought him in with the quarterback play they had last year. The hospitality from the whole facility and all the coaches and staff there, it felt like a good place, and I like Ann Arbor.”
Croucher has visits set for Ole Miss, Oregon and Penn State for the fall, but nothing for Michigan just yet. While he was coy when talking about a potential top list, Croucher said, “Michigan can 100 percent be one of those schools.”
Five-star CB discusses getting offer from Michigan
With nearly two dozen recruits committed from the 2026 class, Michigan’s staff has shifted some focus to the 2027 class and recently offered one of the top-ranked players in that class — five-star cornerback John Meredith III.
Meredith is the No. 4 overall player in the class and the top corner on the 247Sports composite . He spoke about the offer with The Wolverine’s EJ Holland ($).
“It was really good to get that offer from Michigan,” Meredith said. “I’m excited that a school like Michigan sees potential in me. When they offered me, I was excited. I enjoyed getting that offer. It’s a good program. They produce a lot of NFL players.”
Meredith wants to make a visit to Michigan, but nothing has been set as of yet.
Being a top-10 player, all the usual schools are also recruiting Meredith, including Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas and Oklahoma. He did have one interesting quote regarding his potential future destination.
“Distance isn’t going to be a factor for me,” Meredith said. “It’s really just going to come down to whichever school makes me feel like this is my new home. That’s really it.”
Michigan only has one 2027 commit in three-star offensive lineman Lou Esposito Jr.
