It was a successful recruiting weekend for the #Michigan Wolverines, who picked up two flips on the defensive side of the ball. One of those flips, top-100 CB Shamari Earls, has explained his decision to commit to the Wolverines:
While the results on the field were far from ideal , it was a solid recruiting weekend for the Michigan Wolverines . They picked up two commitments on the defensive side of the ball in four-star cornerback Shamari Earls and three-star defensive tackle Benny Patterson .
In this edition of the Recruiting Roundup, we’ll have quotes from Earls after flipping to Michigan, and much more.
Earls details reason for flipping
Earls, rated 87th in the 2025 class on 247Sports composite and 11th among cornerbacks, announced his flip on Friday night. He spoke with The Wolverine’s EJ Holland ($) on why he made that decision.
“I felt like it was a better opportunity, especially for life after football,” Earls said. “I can set myself up for success. Also, a chance to play early.”
The architects of this flip were head coach Sherrone Moore and defensive backs coach LaMar Morgan, who have been in constant communication with the former Georgia commit.
“We have a really close relationship,” Earls said. “It’s been like that since Day 1. They never stopped trying or communicating even after I committed to Georgia. They were always there.”
Earls said that his recent visit during the MSU game confirmed his feelings towards Michigan, and it appears that faith from the coaching staff also played a significant role.
“Coach Moore and Coach Morgan have a lot of trust in me,” Earls said. “Their jobs are on the line, and they have 100 percent faith that I’ll come in and put the work in. It will be a big moment to fill Will’s shoes, but I can’t let it get to me. I’m always going to grind and bring back a national championship.”
Earls is set to graduate in December and enroll early, so if Michigan makes a bowl game, he could be able to get in a few early practices with his new team.
Four-star Oregon CB commit speaks on Michigan’s flip to push him
Earls is far from the only defensive back Michigan is trying to flip, as they’ve been on Oregon commit Brandon Finney’s tail for a while.
Michigan has been pushing hard for the top-100 overall prospect, who made a surprise visit for the Texas game. He is now set to visit for the Northwestern game in a few weeks.
Finney spoke on Michigan and Penn State’s push to flip him in a recent piece by 247Sports’ Brian Dohn ($) . Finney visited for Penn State’s game against UCLA about a month ago and explained why he wants to go back to Ann Arbor.
“It’s to get a better feel for it,” he said. “I feel like (Morgan) is a very family oriented guy and that he is a good person to be around, and a good person to want to develop you.”
It’s unclear when Finney would announce a possible flip, but it likely wouldn’t come until after his visit to Michigan towards the end of the month.
Several top targets speak after visiting for Oregon game
Playing the No. 1 team in the country provides a great opportunity to host recruits. Despite losing the game, more than a few talented recruits got the chance to take part in Michigan’s game day experience. They spoke about that experience with On3’s Steve Wiltfong ($) .
Unranked DL Christian Ingram: “It was crazy……the fans really show a lot of support for the team and I felt lots of love from the staff and the coaches. Just the opportunity to play for such a legacy and great culture excites me to even think about when I think about Michigan.
Three-star LB Cameron White: “The environment was great…the energy was high and the support for the team and culture was definitely shown. The tradition and legacy at Michigan is amazing and something I could see myself being a part of.
Five-star TE Brock Harris: “Man the energy was awesome…the fans were really great. Even though the score didn’t come out in favor of Michigan the throws to Colston Loveland were awesome. They could definitely use me the same way. He had a lot of targets and some great plays. I think he was over 100 yards receiving. That’s what I want to be able to do at the next level. Was great to see it.
