Recruiting Roundup: Michigan fighting for top LB target as decision nears

Michigan has racked up a lot of commitments in recent weeks, and another one could be coming soon from a top LB target. We tackle that and more in today’s Recruiting Roundup:

The Michigan Wolverines have been on a recruiting tear recently and now have one of the best classes in the country. The best part? They aren’t done yet. More commitments are coming, and the next couple months will be a lot of fun.

Let’s discuss all the latest in today’s Recruiting Roundup.

Decision looming for four-star LB target

One target that still needs to make a decision is 2026 four-star linebacker Anthony Davis . The Wolverines are high on Davis’ list, and he is starting to think about a commitment date.

“I’m thinking early August,” Davis recently told On3’s EJ Holland ($) . “I’m just sitting down with my family and putting together a list of things that are going to make a school the right fit for me. I want to go somewhere that’s going to help me get to the next level and better me on and off the field. Sometimes, you have to go far to be great, so distance doesn’t matter to me.”

Davis was on campus for an official visit a couple weeks ago, and it was a good trip. He was able to spend a lot of time with the coaching staff, and he got a good feel for what it would be like to live in Ann Arbor.

“It went well,” Davis said. “I sat down and talked to the coaches, and all that went well. Some of the highlights were just getting to spend time with the coaches and some of the players. I got to see the whole campus, go around town and see the apartments. I got to see a lot.”

With a decision coming in the next month, the Wolverines are in a good spot. Davis went as far to say that Michigan in “still in the same Top-3 range for me,” and that his relationships with position coach Brian Jean-Mary and head coach Sherrone Moore is a big reason the Wolverines are still in the running.

New WR commit breaks down decision

2026 four-star wide receiver Travis Johnson committed to Michigan on the Fourth of July, and at the end of the day, his decision came down to which school felt right.

“Michigan was the best fit for me,” Johnson told Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong . “Coach Bellamy and coach Moore, we clicked from day one when they offered me. Then Chip Lindsey, the new offensive coordinator, I love the new system, and with Bryce Underwood being the new quarterback I could see myself thrive there for sure.”

Underwood has been a big recruiting tool for Michigan, and the fact the Wolverines recently won a national title doesn’t hurt either.

“Just the culture for real, and they won the (national championship) two years ago,” Johnson said. “I want to win one, too. I’m trying my best, going to give my hardest every step of the way to try and get another one.”

It seems like Johnson also has a good understanding of the kinds of relationships and connections he will build at a school like Michigan.

“The people,” Johnson said of what else stood out. “It’s Michigan. It has a big network. The people are good. All of my guys from Virginia are there.”

Michigan wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy has struggled with recruiting in the past, but he is doing a terrific job in this cycle with landing Johnson, four-star Zion Robinson and three-star Jaylen Pile.

New CB commit reveals reasons for decision

One day after Johnson announced his decision, Michigan also landed the commitment of 2026 four-star cornerback Dorian Barney . The Top-150 overall talent is a massive addition to this class, and like many other recruits, he is attracted to the program’s culture.

“The culture is crazy there and the environment is absolutely great,” Barney told Rivals’ Chad Simmons ($) . “When I went to the spring game, fans showed out like they were playing Ohio State…I can’t imagine what it’s like for a real game.

“The relationship I’ve built with the staff over time was big too. I’ve always felt comfortable being around and talking to them at any time. The vibe that me my family get from them fits us right.”

One crucial thing the coaching staff has to drill into the head’s of recruits is the rivalry with Ohio State. Any player coming to Michigan has to understand how important The Game is, and it sounds like Barney gets it.

“I will not lose to Ohio State while I’m there,” he said.

It sounds like Barney is a perfect fit for Michigan.

Quick Hitters

  • It hasn’t been all good news over the last few days, as 2026 four-star cornerback Brody Jennings flipped to Miami over the weekend.
  • 2026 wide receiver Calvin Russell was predicted to land with Michigan, but he chose Syracuse on Saturday night.
