Don’t get too excited, but one recruiting expert thinks the Wolverines are “in the best position” for a certain five-star prospect. We have that and more Michigan news in today’s Recruiting Roundup:
Even though we are in the dog days of summer and most of the recruiting fireworks have already gone off, there are still announcements to be made. Michigan is in the thick of it for several prospects that still haven’t made a decision yet, and some of them will be announcing in the very near future.
Michigan ‘in the best position’ for five-star RB
Tony Alford’s top target throughout the entire 2026 recruiting cycle has been five-star Savion Hiter. The top ranked running back in the country is down to Michigan, Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee. He took official visits to all four schools in June, and it appears the Wolverines and Volunteers are the ones at the top following those visits.
But with Hiter being a quiet guy, he hasn’t spilled the tea as far as when he will be making a commitment or which schools are even leading the way. However, Rivals’ Chad Simmons ($) recently gave some positive vibes for the Wolverines’ chances of landing Hiter.
“The buzz has been around Michigan for some time now,” Simmons said. “Everything seemed to go right on the official visit. There have been some people who have told me that Tennessee views Savion as the David Sanders of this class. People always talked about Ohio State with David Sanders, but Tennessee got him in the end. But I feel like Michigan is in the best position with Tennessee right behind them.”
Don’t take one person’s opinion as gospel, but man, it sure is nice to read that, especially that last sentence.
Hiter would be the crown jewel of Michigan’s 2026 class should he commit. If not, missing on him would be devastating. Michigan would have to go back to square one should he commit elsewhere.
But for now, vibes are high and I am still optimistic for the Wolverines’ chances at landing the best running back in the class.
Top DB target discusses interest in Michigan heading into decision date
One top target that has locked in a commitment date is 2026 four-star defensive back Davon Benjamin . The 6-foot, 170-pounder from California is down to Michigan, Oregon, Texas, Washington and North Carolina. He will make his commitment on Aug. 2.
Speaking with On3’s Oregon reporter Max Torres ($), it appears the Ducks and Wolverines are the two schools fighting for his commitment the most. He officially visited Michigan first, and then went to Oregon a couple weeks later.
“In Ann Arbor, it was real nice,” Benjamin said. “It was a surprising visit for me, especially because I’d never think a kind of kid like me all the way in Michigan. Really when I got out there I was like ‘I can do this.’ It’s something similar to what I’d seen.
“Everybody has their own style of tradition of what it is. Michigan is the most winning program in football history, so when I got down there, just really trying to see what separates Michigan and why do they call them the most winning school in the nation. And see how much they really put time and effort into just trying to be better and pour into the kids. Michigan was a really great visit.”
Benjamin also had good things to say about his time in Eugene and spoke highly of his relationships with the coaches.
Needless to say, this is going to be a fight up until he makes his decision in a few weeks.
