Michigan took the field for its annual spring game on Saturday afternoon, with the blue team winning by a final score of 17-0. With the game not televised live this year, here’s a rundown of all the action from Michigan Stadium on Saturday.
First Quarter
The first drive for the blue team resulted in a three-and-out, with Bryce Underwood getting sacked by Cam Brandt on the first play from scrimmage. The maize team responded with four straight Jordan Marshall carries, but ultimately turned it over on fourth-and-one, with freshman Jordan Young making the fourth-down tackle.
With the ball in maize territory, the blue team went three-and-out again, with two incompletions from Underwood.
The maize team took over at its own 13 yard line after a Hudson Hollenbeck punt. On the first play of its drive, Jadyn Davis completed a 25-yard pass to Donaven McCulley on a free play thanks to the defense jumping offside. The drive would stall just a few plays later.
The blue team took over at its own 12 yard line and was able to move the ball thanks to running back Justice Haynes. He had a 26-yard run to get the ball into maize territory. Underwood ended the quarter with back-to-back completions to Channing Goodwin to get the ball to the maize 20 yard line.
End of First Quarter: Maize 0, Blue 0
Second Quarter
In the maize red zone, Underwood completed a 12-yard pass to Jalen Hoffman on third down, setting up a first-and-goal. The drive wouldn’t advance any further, though, ending in a Stuart Blake field goal to make it 3-0.
On the maize team’s next drive, it advanced to midfield thanks to some defensive holding penalties. Dominic Nichols made up for some of the blue team’s miscues with a sack on Davis. The drive stalled at the blue team’s 39 yard line with a turnover on downs.
The blue team took over from there and advanced past midfield thanks two receptions from Hoffman and two carries from Micah Ka’apana. The drive ended with an interception by Tevis Metcalf on an errant throw from Underwood, giving the maize team the ball at its own four yard line with 1:30 to play in the half.
Playing conservatively, the maize team ran out of the shadow of its goalposts thanks to a 13-yard carry from Bryson Kuzdzal. A Davis sack ended the drive and the half.
End of First Half: Blue 3, Maize 0
Third Quarter
The maize team started with the ball, but its drive didn’t last long, as Jeremiah Lowe corralled an interception off Davis. With the ball in maize territory, Underwood went back to Hoffman twice to move the ball into the red zone. A pass interference penalty gave the blue team the ball at the two yard line. Ka’apana punched it in for the first touchdown of the day, giving the blue team a 10-0 lead.
Needing to respond, the maize team was able to make its way down the field thanks to some nice running from Kuzdzal, including a 38-yard run to get into maize territory. The drive ended around the 25 yard line following a missed field goal.
After the teams swapped three-and-outs, the blue team got the ball back at its own 15 yard line near the end of the quarter. Underwood had a 13-yard completion to Andrew Marsh on an out route, who made a nice move to pick up some additional yards after the catch.
End of Third Quarter: Blue 10, Maize 0
Fourth Quarter
On a third-and-12, Underwood went right back to Hoffman, picking up the first down after a nice catch and run. The blue team moved into maize territory with some solid running from Ka’apna. They went for a home run shot in Goodwin’s direction, but the ball was overthrown out of the end zone by Underwood.
Facing another third-and-long, Underwood used his legs to pick up a first down with a 17-yard run to get to the 29 yard line. However, the drive ended with missed another field goal.
Attempting to narrow the gap, the maize team got the ball back and moved into blue territory with a pair of Davis completions to Logan Forbes. Davis and the maize offense couldn’t generate much after that, but the quarterback did scramble for 13 yards on third-and-12.
The blue team got the ball back in the waning seconds of the game, and used a flea flicker to get the ball in the hands of Jalen Hoffman once again, who went 88 yards for the score. The game would end there, with the blue team victorious.
End of Game: Blue 17, Maize 0
