Earlier this week, The Athletic ranked college football’s top 100 rivalries — and Michigan vs Ohio State was ranked No. 1. This had us thinking, who is Michigan’s second biggest rival? Perhaps you’ll find this question to be a no-brainer, or maybe you’re from a different generation where other rivalries held more significance with the Wolverines than they do now.
- Michigan vs Michigan State certainly has hate and is lived year-round by both fan bases. The rivalry has had volatile and heated moments in recent years and the Wolverines lead the series 74-38-5. The winner receives the Paul Bunyan Trophy, and Paul has been with Michigan three years in a row now. Michigan and Michigan State play on Oct. 25.
- Michigan vs Notre Dame used to be a much bigger deal, but they last played in 2019 and won’t play again until 2033. When these teams play, there’s intrigue from coast to coast and a must-watch on the college football calendar. Michigan and Notre Dame are two of the most historic programs in college football history and Michigan leads the series 25-17-1.
- Michigan vs Minnesota have been playing each other since 1892. The winner gets the Little Brown Jug, which dates back to 1909. Michigan has won five in a row and leads the series 72-22-2. Michigan will play at Minnesota in 2026.
- Michigan vs Penn State is a rivalry that doesn’t go that far back. The first time these programs played was in 1993 and Michigan has a 17-10 record against the Nittany Lions. The next time this rivalry will take place is next season at Michigan Stadium.
