There’s no guarantee Jim Harbaugh will leave Michigan this offseason. If he’s ready to make the jump though, there should only be one destination on his mind: the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers don’t exactly have a great cap situation heading into the 2024 offseason. As of right now, Spotrac has them at $34.5 million over the cap.
While other teams like the Washington Commanders could provide Harbaugh more financial flexibility, they can’t provide him a franchise quarterback. The Chargers, however, can do just that.
Justin Herbert doesn’t have the individual accolades that Patrick Mahomes already has, but there’s no question he has the talent to hoist the Lombardi Trophy someday.
For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg reported in October that Harbaugh is a big fan of Herbert. If that’s true, Los Angeles will look even more attractive to him.
“We just got into a conversation. This had nothing to do with anything, in no way were we talking about him leaving Michigan. We were just talking about quarterback play, and he was raving about Justin Herbert,” Greenberg said.
Another appealing aspect about the Chargers is their draft position. They currently own the No. 5 overall pick in the draft.
If Harbaugh wants an offensive weapon, the front office can target Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. or Georgia’s Brock Bowers. If he wants to fix the offensive line, Olu Fashanu of Penn State would be a great option.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Chargers plan on meeting with Harbaugh next week. It’s imperative they knock that meeting out of the park.
The future of the Chargers may very well depend on whether or not they land Harbaugh.
