Possible Transfer Portal Destinations for Dug McDaniel

March 23, 2024 by Howard Brubaker

Dug McDaniel heads to the transfer portal with several possible destinations.

After two seasons at Michigan, Dug McDaniel has decided to enter the transfer portal. This decision comes after the firing of head coach Juwan Howard . He currently ranks as the number five player in the portal and will be sought after by many big-name programs. Here are a few possible transfer portal destinations for Dug McDaniel.

Possible Transfer Portal Destinations for Dug McDaniel

Georgetown

The program most heavily linked to McDaniel is Georgetown. The Hoyas are coming off of another disappointing season and are looking to turn things around with head coach Ed Cooley. They have a large NIL operation and McDaniel is from the DMV. The only issue is Jayden Epps , the current point guard at Georgetown, is also a freshman. Both are ball-dominant guards who want to be the main scoring option. However, if the two can find a way to co-exist, don’t be surprised if McDaniel transfers to Georgetown.

Maryland

Another name being thrown around as a possible transfer destination for Dug McDaniel is Maryland. The Terps are losing Jahmir Young and will need to replace the all-big ten player. McDaniel would fit nicely in this role and has a similar playstyle to Young. McDaniel is also good friends with current Terp DeShawn Harris-Smith as the two played together in high school at Northern Virginia powerhouse St. Paul VI. He also is familiar with other players on the Maryland roster like Derik Queen and Jamie Kaiser . However, it looks like the Terps are in a good position to land transfer Rodney Rice which may give pause to McDaniel. Overall, Maryland could use a scorer like him and McDaniel may transfer to the Terps.

Memphis

In recent years, Penny Hardaway has switched his philosophy from high school recruiting to the transfer portal. He is an incredible recruiter and has been able to bring great guards to the program. Most recently, Hardaway brought in Jahvon Quinerly from Alabama last year. There appears to be heavy interest from Memphis which makes it very possible that McDaniel transfers there this spring.

Houston

A final destination to look at is Houston. The Cougars are likely losing Jamal Shead and LJ Cryer this year which leaves holes at the guard spot. McDaniel would be a great replacement in this scenario. Houston has become a great basketball under Kelvin Sampson. In recent years he has become a great portal recruiter. he has gotten some big-name players such as the aforementioned Cryer. Houston could very much be a possible transfer portal destination for Dug McDaniel. This option may take some time. Houston is poised to make a deep run in March and may not be able to get McDaniel in for a visit until they are done.

As you all know with the transfer portal, more teams will certainly enter the conversation. Either way, McDaniel will be one of the most coveted transfers of the offseason. He is a great scorer and is incredibly hard to defend because of his speed. Look for this to be a bit of a longer process as many big-name programs will likely enter the mix.
