Sherrone Moore went big when it came to filling out his coaching staff.
Among the many positive things Jim Harbaugh brought to Ann Arbor was a hearty rolodex full of some of the sport’s best potential assistants. Coaches and coordinators came and left during Harbaugh’s tenure, and even though it sometimes required calling in some family favors, he always seemed to replace any departures with just as much quality coming in.
Naturally, one concern with the changing of the guard was how Sherrone Moore would fare in this regard, given his shorter coaching experience and contact list. While not a single snap has been played since Moore officially took over the head coaching position, it sure seems like those fears were misplaced.
In addition to defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, Moore brought in five assistants to coach position groups this fall: Tony Alford (running backs), Steve Casula (tight ends), Lou Esposito (defensive line), Brian Jean-Mary (linebackers; second stint), and LaMar Morgan (defensive backs). Each comes to Michigan with valuable experience and expectations of continuing to build on the program’s recent success.
Which new Michigan position coach do you think will prove to be the best hire?
Alford definitely grabs the headlines given his defection from Columbus, but he does have a strong track record coaching excellent running backs as well. Still, much of the attention is more about the move itself than his resume. Jean-Mary is another name who has brought some positive vibes given his first stint in Ann Arbor, and he has certainly received a warm welcome back.
The name that really jumps out to me, though, is Morgan. For one, he has a history with Jesse Minter and comes to Michigan with defensive coordinator experience. He also is on the younger side (but is far from inexperienced) and seems like he should be able to keep up the strong culture and production from a secondary that has been a huge part of this three-year stretch. This was a smart hire by Moore and one I expect to really pay off going forward.
