Michigan offensive lineman Giovanni El-Hadi is ready to put it all on the field after waiting patiently for his time to shine:
Michigan’s offensive line has long been considered the backbone of its success the past few years, consistently dominating opponents and setting a high standard of excellence. This of course begs the question: “What’s the status of the Wolverines’ new-look offensive line ahead of the 2024 season?”
Fortunately, presumed starter and key member of this year’s unit, Giovanni El-Hadi, appeared on this week’s “In The Trenches ” podcast to bring us up to speed on just that.
Reflecting on the position group’s progress made during fall camp, El-Hadi wasted no time in making it clear this year’s line is committed to maintaining the high bar set by past units.
“It’s been really good,” El-Hadi said. “We’re just working together, going through everything. Trying to uphold the standard of the previous years of how the other offensive lineman were. And just meshing with each other and building that chemistry. It’s been really good.”
The continued focus on chemistry and continuity is crucial for an offensive line that has undergone changes in personnel, but not its identity. The goal remains the same: to smash. El-Hadi emphasized how the formidable opposition they encounter in practice has only been helping to strengthen the line in preparation for this goal.
“People gotta understand that we are facing one of the best defenses in the country every day,” El-Hadi said. “Two of the best defensive tackles, two of the best D-ends, and we’re withholding — we’re doing our thing. They’re always going to doubt us, no matter what. Even if we have five All-Americans, they’ll say ‘they’re bad’ or that we have a bad O-line. So we’ve been doing a really good job of just (setting) our standard, just like every year, smash-mouth football. Everyday, you give it your all.”
El-Hadi has been at Michigan since his freshman year in 2021. Over the years, he has sat patiently as he waited his turn behind guys like Zak Zinter and Trevor Keegan. However, that doesn’t mean other schools weren’t gunning for him to transfer to their school.
“Me personally, when I got up in front of the team and they asked me what my ‘why’ was, I told them: ‘everything I do is for you guys. I’m giving it my all.’ That’s why I stayed all these years — I could have went anywhere. Anybody could have left. All of our star players, we could have lost everybody. But we decided to stay — we decided that we would keep showing them what Michigan football is all about.
“Look, it’s been a while. I’ve just been waiting a while. Yes, I did start a couple games my sophomore year, but I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I trusted god’s plan, god’s process. You know, my plan is different than what god had planned for me and I understood that over the years. I’m just ready — I’m ready to give it my all, I’m ready to be that dog, and I’m even helping the younger players, being that leader on the team.”
As Michigan’s offense gears up for the season, the new starters have everyone guessing what the future could hold for the group. El-Hadi provided a glimpse into the mindset of the unit, emphasizing the chemistry and camaraderie that have been built over the years.
“We have a lot of older players this year that are first-time starters,” he said. “The attitude that we have, always meeting, always talking as an offense. We’re always trying to help each other. Help all of the groups, not just our individual groups. And just that chemistry we’ve built over the years. We’re just ready to show everyone what we’re about. And it’s just great. Me and Dono had similar paths, especially last year with thinking we’re going to start and we’re not. And same thing with Orj and Davis and the wide receivers. It’s going to be a surprise to everybody.”
El-Hadi’s comments are exactly what you want to hear at this juncture from a team that is ready to put it all together on the field and showcase untapped potential. One thing is for certain — we’ll all know soon enough once the season kicks off next weekend.
