While not a dominant week, the past week for Michigan basketball went well, all things considered. With tight wins, but wins nonetheless, at home vs Penn State and at Rutgers, the Wolverines moved to 8-2 in the Big Ten at the midway point of the conference season. They currently sit in third place, just one game back of first place Michigan State, who dropped its first Big Ten game on Saturday.
“I like where we are,” Michigan coach Dusty May said Monday. “If you had said we’d be 8-2 with six games on the road, I probably would have been a little surprised, even though I don’t really look that far ahead. … For us to be able to not play anywhere near our best and find ways to win usually bodes well, because you stay hungry.”
As May alluded, the Wolverines sit in a good place, but they’re still hungry to play their best. Halfway through Big Ten play and with games against Oregon and Indiana on the docket this week, here’s a deep dive into some notes and takeaways from the head coach.
Dusty May reflects ahead of Bloomington return
For May, Saturday’s trip to Assembly Hall will be somewhat of a homecoming. May grew up in southern Indiana before attending Indiana for his undergraduate years, serving as a student manager under legendary Hoosiers coach Bob Knight.
May said he is focused primarily on Wednesday’s game against the Ducks, but he talked a bit about what returning to Indiana will mean.
“Without a doubt, it’s just another game,” May said. “I’m sure that when we go there to practice, you’re walking into a place where you spent 50 hours a week as an undergraduate, a practice rebounder for guys, whatever the case. And then I worked there as a staffer. It’ll be very similar to if we played at the University of Florida, where I had great years as an assistant and have established relationships.”
