The two-quarterback system worked for Michigan against MSU, but it will be tested in a big way against Oregon this week. Davis Warren and Alex Orji complement each other well and have confidence in each other to succeed on Saturdays:
The change of pace between Michigan quarterbacks Davis Warren and Alex Orji played a big role in the 24-17 win over Michigan State on Saturday. The offense was tailored to each quarterback’s skillsets whenever they were in the game, which allowed them ti contribute at a high level.
During his press conference on Monday afternoon, head coach Sherrone Moore discussed why Warren and Orji complement each other so well.
“It was awesome and was what we hoped it would be. They work well in tandem together and we see that in practice,” Moore said. “They really feed off each other. It was cool to watch it come to fruition, not just in practice but to see it in the game. Having that confidence and success was huge. We have to continue to prepare like that.”
Michigan’s offense found a rhythm by putting together four scoring drives following a scoreless first quarter. Warren’s efficiency and poise allowed the Wolverines to move the ball consistently through the air, while Orji did his damage on the ground.
“I think he did a great job getting in and changing the pace in the run game,” Warren said of Orji. “He’s a dynamic athlete. Me and him are super close and we have been through everything. I have full confidence when he goes in there that he’s going to tote the rock and make a play. He made a couple of huge plays for us.”
Orji recorded a team-high 64 rushing yards and one touchdown on just six carries. He led the Wolverines with 10.7 yards per carry and came through down the stretch with two first-down runs in the final minutes to seal the victory. Meanwhile, Warren completed 13-of-19 pass attempts for 123 yards and one touchdown. Most importantly, neither of them turned the ball over.
The two-quarterback system proved effective against the Spartans, but things won’t get any easier against the top ranked Oregon Ducks this weekend. Warren and Orji will need to continue their strong play to give Michigan a chance at pulling off the upset. By maintaining this collaborative quarterback situation, the Wolverines have an opportunity to keep the Ducks on their heels and create beneficial matchups.
Warren’s accuracy throwing the ball and his leadership will be important against Oregon, but Orji’s big play ability with his legs will also give the Ducks something to game plan for. The synergy and versatility between these two will be vital for the Wolverines to sustain drives and find success in the red zone against a high-caliber opponent like Oregon.
