Following a dominant 3-0 week at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas that featured a 40-point win against Gonzaga, Michigan came in at No. 1 in this season’s initial NET rankings. The Wolverines are followed by Duke, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Gonzaga to round out the rest of the top five.
The NET rankings are the NCAA Tournament selection committee’s top tool to help with the selection process. The ranking is calculated using a variety of factors, including game results, strength of schedule, game location and offensive and defensive efficiency, The system also categorizes matchups into four different quadrants. Quad 1 games represent the hardest opponents, while Quad 4 games represent far less competitive opponents.
The No. 1 Wolverines are 7-0 with wins over Gonzaga, Wake Forest, TCU and Auburn.
While it’s still early in the season, the Big East has just four teams in the top-50.
The rankings will be updated daily as more results start to pour in around the country.
