Junior Colson leaves Michigan as a national champion. The linebacker enjoyed numerous special moments during an undefeated junior season, but he singled out the Rose Bowl win.
When asked Wednesday at the NFL Scouting Combine if any game sticks out during his final season at Michigan, Colson identified the College Football Playoff semifinal victory over Alabama.
“I think just the atmosphere, being in the Rose Bowl atmosphere, it just elevates everything,” Colson told reporters (h/t 247Sports ). “Being able to play in that game was phenomenal, something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.”
Colson called it an “emotional” victory amid the drama surrounding Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal and Jim Harbaugh’s suspension.
“They’re a great team,” he added of the Crimson Tide. “It was a great battle against them. I just feel like the atmosphere there elevated everybody’s game to a whole new level, and it was something worthwhile to see.”
Michigan topped Alabama in a 27-20 overtime thriller that met the lofty hype. Colson tallied a team-high 10 tackles to steer the Wolverines to the National Championship Game, where they earned a less suspenseful 34-13 win over Washington.
After collecting 256 tackles over three seasons at Ann Arbor, Colson decided to leave on a high note. Colson said he and Harbaugh both felt it was the “right time” for him to enter the NFL.
“I’ve played in a lot of games. I’ve started since my freshman year,” Colson said. “To be able to come out, I’ve given everything to Michigan, so now I think it’s time to try at the next level.”
Colson was one of a record 18 Michigan players invited to Indianapolis for this week’s combine. The No. 65 overall player on Pro Football Focus’ draft board will look to bolster his stock at Lucas Oil Stadium.
