Sherrone Moore is putting together an intriguing staff for his first season as Michigan’s head coach.
On Friday morning, Matt Zenitz reported that Michigan is hiring Louisiana defensive coordinator LaMar Morgan. He’ll be the defensive backs coach for the Wolverines.
Apparently, former Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter spoke glowingly of Morgan.
“Morgan impressed Michigan during the interview process and came recommended from ex-Michigan DC Jesse Minter, whom he worked with at Vanderbilt,” Zenitz wrote.
Per the report from Zenitz, this hire will complete Moore’s staff for the 2024 offseason. As for Morgan, he already informed Louisiana players of his decision.
Prior to becoming a coach, Morgan was considered a standout safety for Louisiana from 2003-2007.
Morgan started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Vanderbilt. He then became the defensive backs coach for Western Carolina. After the 2015 season, he accepted the same job title at Louisiana–Monroe.
As Louisiana’s defensive coordinator this past season, Morgan coached a unit that ranked No. 1 nationally in defensive touchdowns. They were also top-35 in sacks and defensive yards per play.
There’s no question that Michigan is a huge step up from Louisiana. That being said, he seems up for the challenge. Besides, all his focus will be on the secondary.
