With J.J. McCarthy off to the NFL, the Michigan Wolverines will have a new starting quarterback under Sherrone Moore in 2024. Will it be last year’s No. 2 quarterback Jack Tuttle?
Taking to X on Saturday, Tuttle announced that his “journey continues” at Michigan next season. “So many memories and great people. The journey continues,” Tuttle wrote .
Michigan sports insider Anthony Broome confirmed a short while later that Tuttle’s waiver for a seventh college football season has been approved. “Jack Tuttle is running it back in 2024. Waiver approved,” Broome wrote .
Tuttle joined the Wolverines as a sixth year senior in 2023 after spending the previous four years with the rival Indiana Hoosier. But in five years in Bloomington, Tuttle threw less than 200 passes. He never played for Utah, the team he enrolled for back in 2018.
As backup to McCarthy in 2023, he completed 15 of 17 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown.
With no new quarterbacks joining the Wolverines via the transfer portal, it stands to reason that Tuttle will enter training camp as QB1 but will likely face stiff opposition from some of the team’s highly-touted younger QB prospects.
Filling McCarthy’s shoes is going to be a tough ask of any quarterback, let alone Tuttle. This past year McCarthy had one of the best seasons in Michigan history, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and 22 touchdowns while leading them to their first national title in over 25 years.
Michigan might be further hampered by the loss of head coach Jim Harbaugh, who on top of everything else, was touted as one of the best quarterback whisperers in all of football.
